Celebrating Halloween in an eco-friendly way: it's possible!

Halloween isn't the favorite holiday of many children and adults for nothing! It brings together many common passions: costumes, celebrations, candy and morbid decorations. How can you not fall under the charm of this holiday?

This fall, whether you plan to give candy to the children in your neighborhood, organize a well-watered Halloween party or watch horror movies curled up, you will need some decorations. In order to celebrate the Day of the Dead while producing less waste and limiting your overconsumption, here are some tips for an eco-responsible Halloween!

1 - Make the most of your pumpkin

A carved pumpkin, lit from the inside by a candle, is an essential Halloween decoration. To limit waste, you can reuse the flesh and seeds by creating delicious pumpkin-based recipes. Easy to freeze, rich in fiber and nutrients, this fruit is just waiting to be eaten. Lacking inspiration? Try this delicious sweet bark with pumpkin seeds. Enjoy your meal!

Psst! Don't forget that pumpkins, the day after Halloween, go to compost!

2 - Opt for recycled decorations

Instead of going to the store to buy paper garlands and balloons that would end up in the trash the next day, use your imagination and set the mood using recycled materials:

  • Reuse all your old Halloween decorations;
  • Rip up old curtains or clothing into tatters and dip them in black tea to create mummy ribbon-like garlands;
  • Fill mason jars with bizarre objects, colored water, or various curiosities to give your home the look of a mad scientist's laboratory;
  • Create your own spider webs out of yarn balls that have been sitting in the drawer since your short-lived knitting phase in 2015;
  • Go to thrift stores to find little treasures;
  • Save everything you can for next year.

3 - Forget disposable items

It is entirely possible to buy your candy in bulk or in large format. Also, avoid preparing surprise bags with plastic packaging. You will limit your waste! Also, the serving dishes and bowls, candy bags, plates, glasses and utensils for your guests have no good reason to be single-use. Waste is too scary, even for Halloween!

4 - Make your own costume

There's no need to buy new costumes every year! Dig through your wardrobe and turn old clothes into original costumes by finding inspiration on the web. Moreover, you can easily find second-hand costumes and decorations on classified ad sites such as Kijiji and Marketplace. You could also find everything you need at thrift stores. In many shops, it is even possible to rent your costume.
