Since summer in Quebec is short, Quebecers like to be equipped to take full advantage of it. This is probably why there are more pools per capita in the Belle Province than in California and as many as in Florida. Indeed, some 500,000 residential pools are installed throughout the Quebec territory, ready to cool their owners during the summer season.
Do you also cultivate the desire to have your own pool? The first step is to choose the one that perfectly suits your needs. In-ground pool or above-ground pool? That is the question! Since this is a significant investment, you will find here everything you need to know to compare these two types of pools and make an informed decision.
Above-ground pools
As its name suggests, the above-ground pool is a permanent installation that sits above the ground. Its size usually varies between 12 feet in diameter for the smallest and 40 feet by 21 feet for the largest, and can reach a maximum depth of 54 inches.
In terms of materials, you can choose from the following options: a galvanized steel pool (the most economical), aluminum (it doesn't rust), steel with a resin exterior finish (high-end and more durable option), wood (more aesthetic, but more expensive to purchase and maintain) or extruded, injected or blown resin (very strong and durable).
There are approximately 400,000 above-ground pools in Quebec, which is 4 times more than in-ground pools. Beyond the affordable purchase price, the above-ground pool has other interesting attractions that appeal to many Quebecers every year.
The advantages of the above-ground pool :
- The cost: depending on the material used, you should expect an average of between $3,000 and $12,000 for the installation of an above-ground pool, which is 5 to 15 times cheaper than an in-ground pool.
- The space used: the above-ground pool usually integrates more easily into the available area. It often requires less space and little work to prepare or level the ground.
- Maintenance products: above-ground pools require fewer products for water treatment.
- Water and electricity consumption: since it is normally smaller and shallower than the in-ground pool, it consumes less electricity and water.
- The speed of installation and its easy removal: it is faster to install than the in-ground model. It takes about 1 to 2 days for installation, while the in-ground pool requires at least 15 days. It is also easier to remove an above-ground pool from the landscaping.
The disadvantages of the above-ground pool:
- Its limited size: the above-ground pool is usually smaller than the in-ground pool.
- The limited choice of shapes: you only have two shape choices, round or oval.
- Its depth level is standardized and invariable.
- Its lifespan is limited.
- The above-ground pool has little impact on the real estate value of a property.
In-ground pools
Those who wish to beautify their landscaping or have a pool for swimming laps or diving will probably turn to an in-ground pool. This can be customized, thanks to a large choice of materials, shapes, depths and sizes.
There are several types of in-ground pools: concrete (durable, resistant and very versatile, but expensive), those made of steel panels and a concrete bottom (more affordable), those made of a resin and concrete alloy (which are corrosion resistant), and those made of fiberglass (which are quick to install, less durable and more expensive than concrete ones).
In Quebec, there are approximately 100,000 in-ground pools. If they are less numerous in the territory than above-ground pools, it is undoubtedly due to their price, which can be up to 15 times higher.
The advantages of the in-ground pool:
- Its customization: it offers a much more diverse range of sizes, shapes, materials and landscaping.
- Its surface area: its size can be larger and it can offer a larger swimming area as well as different depths.
- Its aesthetic aspect: it is aesthetically more pleasing and allows for a more refined landscaping.
- Its durability: it is more resistant to winters and water temperature fluctuations.
- Its value: it helps to increase the resale value of a property.
- Its multifunctionality: it can be used for relaxation, sports or to entertain children (slide, etc.).
The disadvantages of the in-ground pool:
- Its high cost: you should expect an average of between $20,000 and $45,000 for the purchase and installation of an in-ground pool.
- Installation time: construction work is much longer, due to excavation and the various components of the layout such as paving. Installation takes at least 15 days.
- Maintenance products: it usually requires more products and accessories (slide, multiple ladders, diving board, stairs, lights, etc.).
- Its water heats up naturally more slowly.
The similarities
In both cases, manufacturers of in-ground pools as well as those of above-ground models offer warranties of similar durations for the structure, installation, equipment, and liner.
Regarding weekly maintenance, it is practically the same for in-ground and above-ground pools. It is rather when opening and closing your pool that the differences are most noticeable. In the case of an in-ground pool, it is sometimes recommended to call on a professional for these steps, in order to prolong its lifespan.
Five important criteria to consider
Now that you know the advantages and disadvantages of the two most popular types of pools in Quebec, the second step to making an informed decision is to define your needs and preferences. Think short-term, but also about your plans: children, moving, renovations, landscaping your yard, etc. Here are 5 criteria to consider to guide you towards the perfect pool for you:
1. Your budget
This criterion will be decisive in your pool choice, as the price difference is significant between these two types. If you have a small budget, you can cross out the in-ground pool and simply choose an above-ground pool. On the other hand, if you have a good budget and your goal is, among other things, to create a beautiful layout, consider the in-ground pool.
2. Your usage
Ask yourself the following question: why do you want to install a pool on your property? If it's to cool off and entertain the children, an above-ground pool can perfectly do the job. On the other hand, if you want to swim laps, dive or even slide, you may need an in-ground pool. If you love to receive and entertain guests at home, the landscaping options offered by the in-ground pool can be interesting attractions for you.
3. Your medium and long-term plan
Before investing in a pool, it is important to establish your medium and long-term plan. Do you plan to live in your current residence for a long time? If so, you will want a durable pool. You will also be able to amortize this investment over time, which can make the in-ground pool more attractive, despite its high cost.
You won't be staying at this address for long? An above-ground pool may be the most thoughtful option, knowing that it can be easily removed from the development by future owners, and that it may be difficult to repay the recent investment in an in-ground pool when you resell your home. You won't be staying at this address for long? An above-ground pool may be the most thoughtful option, knowing that it can be easily removed from the development by future owners, and that it may be difficult to repay the recent investment in an in-ground pool when you resell your home.
Do you rather aim to increase the value of your property? The in-ground pool is the solution for you.
4. Your land
The dimension, slope and general condition of your land are important elements to consider when choosing the right pool for you. If you need a very specific model, the in-ground pool is probably the ideal option for you. If you prefer to have more space to allow your children to have fun in your yard, consider the above-ground pool which is less bulky on the ground.
5. Your schedule
Finally, determine your timeline. When do you want to be able to enjoy your pool? Is it a long-term or short-term project? If your goal is to be able to swim as quickly as possible, opt for an above-ground pool. If you are not in a hurry, because you want to integrate your pool well into your landscaping, or if you prefer to save to have the pool of your dreams, you will be satisfied with an in-ground pool.
Steps to follow, from purchase to your first swim
- Choose your pool type: considering the advantages and disadvantages of each type and taking into account your criteria, choose the perfect model for you.
- Check regulations, determine the location and apply for your permit: check the minimum distances to be respected for installation and the easements imposed by your municipality. This will help you determine the ideal location which should be in a sunny corner, without too many trees. Apply for your permit which will confirm the location.
- Shop and buy your pool: visit several manufacturers and do your research. Don't hesitate to request multiple installation quotes to compare prices and warranties.
- Contact your home insurer: inform your insurer of the installation of a swimming pool on your property and, if necessary, make adjustments to your contract so that it's covered by your home insurance.
- Prepare your site for installation: make room for machinery and clear vegetation from the installation site.
- Have your electrical system checked: call in an electrician who can check that your electrical system is powerful enough to power your pool accessories, and that it complies with standards.
- Open your pool: get all the equipment and products you need to open your pool properly, according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Maintain and enjoy your pool: follow your pool and spa manufacturer's maintenance instructions and clean frequently. Above all, enjoy it!
Pool insurance: what you should know
Buying a pool is a major investment, which is why you'll want to protect it. What's more, did you know that water damage due to pool breakage is a frequent cause of property damage? So the question is: does your home insurance cover your pool?
In short, even if your home insurance protects most of your belongings, it does not necessarily cover damage to your in-ground pool, above-ground pool or spa.
Some insurance policies offer coverage for this by default, while others require the addition of an endorsement, under certain conditions. Check with your insurance representative.
And what happens if your pool causes water damage? Damage caused by water damage initiated by your pool is covered by your home insurance. What's more, the civil liability insurance linked to your home insurance covers you against bodily injury or property damage caused to others, for example if a guest is injured in your pool, or if the breakage of your pool causes damage to your neighbor's house.
