We're already starting to pull out our thick sweaters and warm blankets. The days are getting shorter and the leaves are changing colors. Winter is starting to peek around the corner
Before the first snowfall, it's important to prepare your home for winter. To simplify your life, we've compiled a short list to help you remember everything so your property is ready for the cold season.
Preparing the exterior of your home
1- Clean and store garden furniture
Prior to putting away your outdoor furniture, take a moment to clean it with soapy water or follow your supplier's guidelines to maintain its appearance for longer. Do the same with all your decorations and cushions.
Next, place your furniture in a sheltered area, such as your garage or garden shed, to protect it from the weather. If space is limited, use protective covers or a large tarpaulin.
2- Drain outdoor pipes
To prevent your water pipes from freezing and bursting, it is recommended to drain all outdoor faucets and close the supply valve for the winter. Also, open the faucets to allow any remaining water to escape.
3- Inspect the condition of your gutters
Clear the gutters of dead leaves and other accumulated debris and also make sure they are in good condition.

4- Prepare your yard
- Cover shrubs that are sensitive to the cold;
- Apply autumn fertilizers to help trees, lawns, perennials, and shrubs;
- Collect the leaves;
- Mow the lawn one last time;
- Regularly water your hedges, lawn, and garden;
- Apply mulch around the base of your plants and shrubs to protect the roots from rodents and harsh weather;
- Empty flower pots and planters;
5- Inspect your roof and exterior walls
Take the time to thoroughly inspect your roof and exterior walls to prevent water infiltration that could cause significant damage with thawing.
6- Make your BBQ shine
Thoroughly clean the grates and burners with a degreaser. Then, you can wash the basin with a degreaser and a brush to remove all residues. Store your BBQ in your shed or cover it with a protective cover. For 4-season BBQ enthusiasts, bring it closer to your patio door and leave a shovel nearby to clear the snow.

7- Get the shovels out
Yes...already!
Place them in a convenient location near your salt bag, snow blower, and all other essential tools for the cold season.
Indoor home preparations :
1- Check the sealing of your doors and windows
To prevent water infiltration and save on your heating bill, check the seals and replace them if necessary.
2- Remove and wash your window screens
During the summer, your screens protect you from mosquitoes, but they also accumulate dust, pollen, and all sorts of particles. So once a year, clean all your screens with a brush and soapy water. Then, store them in a room for the winter.
3- Have your chimney swept
For those who have a fireplace, have it inspected and swept before using it as a safety measure. It is very important to do this every year to prevent fires, smoke damage, and carbon monoxide hazards.

4- Remove dust from your electric baseboard heaters
During spring and summer, your electric baseboard heaters accumulate dust and other debris. To avoid unpleasant surprises and odors, give them a quick vacuum.
5- Inspect your ventilation and heating system
Make sure everything is working properly and maintain your system as needed.
