Many of us have realized how essential the outdoor landscaping of our property is to fully enjoy the pleasures our land offers us.

If you're one of those who dream of a change of scenery in the spring, be aware that many landscaping projects require a permit, and obtaining one can sometimes be complex.

Here are some projects for which you will need to obtain a permit.

Pool

A source of pleasure for many families, the swimming pool is the perfect installation for having fun, relaxing, or simply cooling off on hot summer days. As provided for in the Regulation respecting the safety of residential pools, 'a municipal permit is required to build, install or replace a swimming pool, or to erect a construction providing access to it or preventing access to it'.

So, before you can play Marco Polo with the kids, you'll need to apply for a permit and pay the fees to your municipality.

What about the spa? Although most municipalities do not require a permit for the installation of a spa of less than 2,000 liters, exceptions may apply. It should be noted that in all cases, the spa must be closed by a rigid cover equipped with a safety device preventing its opening.

Garden shed

Whether a simple storage space or a perfectly arranged workshop for your favorite hobby, the shed is as practical as it is versatile. However, the regulations surrounding it vary from one city to another. They can apply to the height, the type of materials chosen, and even the intended use.

As a general rule: a shed installed in the backyard and not exceeding 15 square meters in area should normally be accepted by your municipality. You just need to obtain the required permit.

Rooftop terrace

Dreaming of a rooftop terrace? First and foremost, consult your municipality's urban planning department, as there are many restrictions.

In some cases, plans may even be required so that your municipality can ensure that your project complies with the standards regarding the distances to be maintained from the facade and the party walls.
